Moving our blog site from Sandbox to QSFP

Well, I've gotten all 48 of our existing blog posts from my MySpace and from Dragona's MySpace and from our Sandbox and from my Yahoo! 360 (except for the poll I posted there, but I'll catch that one soon too). However, I still need to transfer all the comments and those are going to be interesting because QSFP doesn't really allow for posts by non-members. So on the comments that were originally posted by folks who are no longer active on our membership here, I'm planning to credit them as being posted by Guest and last edited by the person who really posted it, it's the only way I can think of to get their name in correctly.

Fortunately, the vast majority of the 103 comments that I still have to transfer were made by one of the 8 people who are already registered as members here. In fact, if I can get Kiasyn & Tom Green to register here, I'll only have a couple of those 103 that I won't be able to 'properly' credit towards someone's post count.

I'll either add another post to the front page news like this one when I get the comments finished or I'll comment on this post, I haven't decided which yet. Either way, once the outstanding comments/replies have been transferred (which involves copying/pasting them in as replies here then going into the database and correcting their time/date stamp and author fields), I'll go back and lock most of the old topics (blogs with comments) so that we're only watching for responses to the more recent ones. I'm figuring topics that are a month old are probably not really needing to remain open anymore.

I have set up a general chatter forum for folks to add in their own two cents if you want to regarding anything we haven't already blogged about. If we find that that section is growing beyond just a MySpace style Comments, or what other sites are calling ShoutOuts type thing, I'll be happy to add additional forums for you all too, just let me know.

Also, for those of you who are interested in using this site for your own blogs as well: Click on the Members link on the Nav Bar at the top of the page and find your name there. If it's listed as being in the "Immediate Family", "Extended Family", or "Family Friends" groups, just drop me a PM (Personal Message) and I'll get you set up with a forum of you own. Do me a favor though, in that PM, please include what you want your blog (forum) to be called. (Like my blog area is Conner's Corner and Dragona's is Dragona's Den, etc.. yes, I'm trying to keep each person's area to something cute and, ideally, house related...).

Anyway, for a quick update to indicate that we've got all the blogs transferred to here, this is turning into quite the rambling, so I'll leave off now, though I will note that we've a doctor's appointment tomorrow (later today?) regarding the new baby, so you can expect to see a new blog post by either Dragona, myself, or both tomorrow night. :)

Ok, with Dragona's help, I've finished bringing in all the old comments. There were 103 of them, and it seems that 11 of them got credited to "Guest" for now. Should Laura, Brittany, Tom Green, Kiasyn, and Freak with Bangs (Zachary's ex-girlfriend) ever actually register here, perhaps I'll fix the author field on those posts to reflect properly instead of how they currently show. But they do each currently show as posted by Guest on the right date/time and edited by the right person at the same date/time. The only place this seems to be a minor problem is on the comments that were added to blog posts that made the front page news which don't show the edited by line, but I suppose that's a minor enough thing since these are really only for archive posts anyway. All future posts will be made by registered members of the site since non-registered members can't see the majority of our posts and can't comment on any of them.

So now I'll see about adding that poll from my Yahoo! 360 site that I mentioned earlier...

Oh, and locking the older topics and all the blogs on the old sandbox site.. maybe I'll post one blog everywhere to indicate that we've moved our family blogs to here too... Though I'm not sure that I want to go fully 'public' until June...

Btw, for those who might be wondering, Dragona and I have decided that rather than rush to lock down all the old blogs, we're going to leave them all open for new comments for a few days (maybe a week) and then go through and start locking the older ones.

In fact, since this forum software (as opposed to blog software) doesn't have a way to automatically close/lock old topics/blogs, meaning they have to be "locked" individually by hand, I'm rather inclined to only close the ones that are old and inactive, especially since this software also tends to sort them by last activity rather than original post date like most blog software would. Personally, I think there are some distinct advantages to that facet of using this software rather than a typical blog package, for me, primarily that it's much easier this way to spot new comments/replies. Also, certain 'blogs' (like my transplanted poll from yahoo 360) I'll prolly leave open even longer so folks can get a vote in and we can eventually actually have a few numbers there too. ;)

Anyway, just wanted to post some sort of update about this.
