New Server

I apologize to any who were inconvenienced by the last few days while everything was being transitioned to the new server and everything's not quite done yet, in fact, but the web sites are all back now and we're mostly operational again.

For those who are curious, much of the new server's "stats" are visible at our System Information page.

For those wondering what's not done yet:

  • I'm still trying to get my CVS repositories transferred (and working)

  • I've still got to rename the box (and swap it's IP with the old server) and relocate it to where the old server sits so the cable from the cable modem will reach it

  • We're currently making our final tests today for the mud (which is "wizlocked" so no one who's not "immortal" can log on while we work on it) before 're-opening' officially with multiclass in place tomorrow

  • Getting several forum posts, including this one, done

  • Transitioning of our dynamic hostname resolution is still not 100% complete

  • Not all of the "cron jobs" are tested yet and I may have missed one or two in the transfer - oddly enough, possibly true of some files from the /home folder as well

  • I still need to remind the folks at Pabulum that they need to let me know if they need anything configured non-stock due to their using g++ to compile which I don't use and the fact that we've transitioned from FC3 (32 bit) to Ubuntu 8.04 (64 bit) - likewise, I need to remind the folks at the Smaug Building Institute that we've made that transition and their code currently in use appears to be based on SmaugFUSS 1.9 which has issues with the compiler and so they may need to add -V 4.1 to their Makefile or otherwise address those issues for their mud to continue to run

  • ...I think that's everything, but time will certainly tell what else I've missed as well. ...and then once this transition is done, we can start on the next few major projects. :D

If I seem unreachable lately, now you know why.. likewise, after tomorrow, I expect to be unreachable for a couple of days while we turn a doctor's trip for my son into a two day 'get away'.. after that, things can go back to being called normal. ;)

Otherwise, I hope you all are having a great Labor Day Weekend! :bye:

Sounds incredibly busy. I hope that, though time consuming, everything goes smoothly 4 u.

Thanks, it feels worse than it sounds.. and the two day "get away" turned into a 6 day ..."vacation" that has me feeling like I need a vacation. ;)

Alas, now that I'm back: in our absence our players on the MUD have reported some fairly major bugs that we need to address (so much for final testing, eh?); the CVS repository also still needs to be finished; & I wasn't able to completely retire the old server because it seems that one of the two network cards in the new server doesn't have good drivers out there yet for Linux... Guess I still don't get to start up on the next set of major code projects quite yet after all. :sigh:

    Just a bit of follow-up...

Here it is a few days later and everything from the server transition appears to be done now (though we've decided, at least for now, to leave the old server in place to serve soley as our firewall since we had trouble with the network card in the new box and don't have another network card handy).

Also our main MUD web site at http://tcdbbs.zapto.org/mud/ has been almost completely redone and now even includes a java based client so you can log into the mud from within your web browser!

hmmm..... I don't know if it's a big problem, but I tried to copy a joke into the "funnies" section, and I keep getting a blank post.... don't know why - I even added some text, but its not showing up - it's probably a PEBKAC problem - it is late and all, but I can't seem to figure it.....  :yt:

Odd, I just checked and your post is there but it has no content at all, not so much as a image tag. :(

If it let you create the post, you should've been able to include content in the post just like you do in any other thread, but I'll check the perms for you on that thread to be sure too.

{Edit} Hmm, actually, if anything you've got more permissions than you probably should have, but we tend to trust our family members and family friends members pretty far. So, basically, I don't know why it didn't take your post. :(
